Weekly round-up: Bristol Snow, Some Social Media Advice & the Mandolinsect

Bristol on the way into work this morning

It's only the 3rd week of January but it feels like so much has happened already this year. We didn't have a white Christmas, but we definitely had snow this winter. The sights were amazing on the way into work this morning, kids (and adults) throwing snowballs, cars slipping around the place and a man skiing down Park street

David Roberts, Paralympic Gold Medallist
This week we've continued to work on a number of website builds which we anticipate will be going live soon. We've also been planning some fresh designs for a local charity and a school in Wales.

We've been planning new features for our Bristol Unique Guide App, and we're very excited at the prospect of it's reaching more people in and around Bristol in the near future. Anyone interested in Bristol art may want to visit the Linda Alvis new exhibition at the RWA, starting this weekend.

We were extremely privileged to meet David Roberts, 11-time Paralympic Gold Medallist winner, earlier this week.

David talked movingly about the levels of commitment he needed to succeed the way he did and discussed the difficult aspects of training in terms of being away from his family for so long.

David aims to be the UK's most successful paralympic athlete ever and he has our full support!

Marketing and social media: Be Realistic

We often get asked about the overall value of social media for small to medium sized businesses. Social media and the majority of well-known online social platforms are here to stay for the foreseeable future and the overall benefits of using social media for building your company's online and offline profile can be unprecedented. We particularly like the Guardian's overview of how social media can benefit small businesses.

Social media campaigns managed well can also significantly bring down the cost of your usual overheads, especially if you're used to relying on face to face marketing and more traditional means of advertising.

However, social media can also be extremely time consuming. The findings of a study recently published on NuWire Investor shows only 35% of small businesses have decided to get on board with social media.

We're sure one reason for this is that some companies feel they simply just don't have the time for it.

If this sounds like you, we highly recommend Social Media Today's You'll Never be Coca Cola: Social Media for Small Businesses

Effective social media for most companies needs to be a realistic, managed and well thought out process, with ROI at the forefront of this planning. You don't need to be on every social platform, you just need to plan your strategy well, monitor your progress and concentrate on the overall vision ahead. Business2Community offers a great social media strategic plan template and here's a list of some of the best tools you can use to manage your social media.

Remember good old Mr Zip from Britain's Got Talent? He'll never lose his keys or phone again with Stick-N-Find.

Place a bluetooth sticker on anything your keys, phone, dog, and you'll always be able to locate them again using an app on your smartphone.

By now, many of us will have heard of 3D printing, but won't have tried it at home. Cubify, who won Best Emerging Technology at CES 2013 now want to domesticate the 3D printer by introducing it at the desktop, consumer level. In a few years time, maybe we'll be able to print our own spare bicycle and car parts!

We always like to keep on top of the trends - Dr Who and Upcycling are both undeniably pretty fashionable right now. But what happens when you combine them? Perhaps it's this Mandolinsect, made from an old Mandolin, antlers and other found items.

It's your turn!

We're always interested to hear your comments so feel free to send us your feedback or any suggestions you have for future content, and have a great weekend in the snow!
